S.T.A.G. PROJECTS                     

Below are a selection of some of our projects. Many of these projects are carried out as sites can be made available so recent ones may be revisited. Excavations and surveys at other sites are virtually complete but finds studies and reporting are often continuing. We welcome inquiries and requests for further details from researchers with an interest in these sites.around the area.


  Air Raid Shelters STAG has surveyed, drawn and photographed a number of these rapidly disappearing world war 2 structures
  Altrincham Research Project This is a long term project to identify the gaps in our knowledge of the history af the town. Work is currently in progress to collect all existing available material and to investigate historic buildings or sites as they become available.

Building survey of historic aviation buildings from the 1930's through World War II. 

Bowdon stratigraphy

A proposed survey of the area around Bowdon church.
  Buckton Castle Assistance to UMAUA in 2007 and 2008 on this Norman castle site
   Carrs Mill, Stalybridge Excavation, drawing and reporting on a water powered wool/cotton mill on the Carrs Brook near Stalybridge. Excavation complete.

The Carrs Silk Mill, Wilmslow:

An excavation, drawing and report on a late 18th century water powered textile mill which burned down and was demolished in 1923.

Resistivity survey and excavation prior to a geological excavation

Hales Field, High Legh

Roman fortlet site with indications of other domestic habitation. Investigated over a number of years. Documentation and reporting in progress.
  The Knoll, Altrincham A small excavation on the site of a demolished house called The Knoll situated on Stamford Street c.50m away from the excavation on Victoria Street.

Little Bollington - Fairy Brow

Excavation of a Bronze Age burial mound containing cremation burial and dagger.

  Manley Old Hall Dovecote Recording of a building on the edge of a moated platform site
  Millington Surveys of buildings for a publication of the history of the manor. 
  Millington Hall Farm Resistivity survey and excavation to examine early history of the site
  Millington Mill Site work to try to locate the site of the mediaeval corn mill.
  Mobberley Priory Geophysical survey to investigate the site of an Augustinian Priory. Reported to National Trust. Awaiting permission for further investigations.
  Moore's Hat Factory, Denton Survey and Recording. Results passed to UMAU for inclusion in their publication.

Moss Brow, Warburton

Geophysical survey and archaeological excavation on a possible Roman fortlet site.
  Moss Mill, Broadbottom Clean-up and recording of remains of an 18th cent mill for UMAU. 
  Oakfield House, Altrincham Survey and photographic recording prior to demolition of a late 19th century works.

Oaklands Farm barns, Hale Barns

Building and preliminary below-ground survey of 18th/19th century barns prior to development of the site.

Quarry bank Mill, Styal

Excavation of late 18th century foundations at the Apprentice House.

Quarry Bank, Timperley

Building survey and documentary research of a quarry workshop

Timperley Old Hall

Excavation and documentary research of the mediaeval moated site. The  mediaeval moated manor site developed to an 18th century house and farm. See publications for details of book available. This site has produced a large number of finds, particularly pottery from the 14th century through to the 20th century. The finds are subject of a continuing study.
